39 Steps at Cine Retro Screening Dec 13

SCREENING DECEMBER 13, 2008

The 39 Steps (1935)

Director: Alfred Hitchcock
Cast: Robert Donat, Madeleine Carroll, Lucie Mannheim, Peggy Ashcroft.

The zenith of the director's British period featuring his oft repeated plot line of an innocent man thrown into extraordinary circumstances beyond his control. Surprising plot twists with thrilling chase sequences are underscored by a sexy repartee between the two main leads.

The Gin Club Xmas Show at Old Museum 13 December

GIN CLUB PRESS RELEASE - XMAS SHOWS

The Gin Club play their 4th annual Xmas party on Saturday December the 13th at the Old Museum, Bowen Hills.

2008 has been a very busy year for the Gin Club. They performed at the Big Day Out, Splendour in the Grass and Gympie Music Muster festivals, travelled to the United States for the Musexpo Music conference, supported Band of Horses and The Drones on national tours and even found time to record another 30 tracks for at their rural hideaway outside Rockhampton. As well as this, they took out the 'Best Rock Song', 'Best Folk Ballad' and 'Song of the Year' prizes at the Q Song, Queensland's music industry awards.

Joining them for the Christmas Party are local folk whisperer Jacob S. Harris, recently returned from a Canadian jaunt; Sydney's amazing Aerial Maps featuring members of the Hummingbirds and Modern Giant; Melbourne's alt-country rabble rousers Clinkerfield; and local heartbreakers Texas Tea, whose new album The Junkship Recordings has just been released. Surely one of the most awesome assemblages of astounding Australian artistry that Brisbane has seen in recent years... Aerial Maps in particular are a very exciting new act, make sure you get along early! Utterly compelling.

The QWO are proud to present their final concert for 2008, '12 Seconds to the Moon'. Alfred Reed’s Marimba Concertino, performed by QWO percussionist Jacob Cavanough, and Robert W. Smith’s Twelve Seconds to the Moon are two pieces that you will be talking about long after the concert is finished, and of course everyone will love Alford’s Standard of St George and Sousa’s The Aviators.

The QWO would love as many people in the
Brisbane and Queensland community as possible to have the chance to hear and appreciate one of the best ensembles in the country. Come along and hear why the QWO are the 2008 Australian National Band Champions.

We hope to see you there!

Cine Retro Classic Cinema November 15

The Letter (1940)

"...With all my heart I still love the man I killed!"

Director - William Wyler
Cast - Bette Davis, Herbert Marshall, James Stephenson, Gale Sondergaard, Willie Fung.

Davis gives a powerhouse performance as the adultress who empties a gun into her lover, claiming self defence. With a perfect cast of supporting players, particularly Stephenson as the compromised lawyer, this film is expert cinematic theatre. You'll also experience one of Max Steiner's most atmospheric scores matching the stunning use of shadow. This film, from what was probably the Hollywood studio system's peak year, is a fine example of the slickness and polish that was achieved by this "studio system".

Cine Retro Classic Cinema 'History is made at Night' (1937) Sept 13

SCREENING SEPTEMBER 13, 2008

Cine-Retro presents a special and rarely seen film....

History is Made at Night (1937)

Director - Frank Borzage
Cast - Charles Boyer, Jean Arthur, Colin Clive

Independently produced to the tune of one million dollars (huge for 1937), which is clearly evident on the screen. One of the most romantic films of the 1930's, this hidden gem has a brilliant blend of comedy, drama and tragedy. Arthur plays an unhappily married woman to a possesive,  jealous husband meeting charming Parisian (Boyer) in the midst of her marital misery.
